Viewing Post for: Everest Base Camp #1 & #2

Date: Thursday, October 11
Location: Namche Bazaar, 13,300 feet, 6 hours of walking.

We turned the corner and there through the pines, on the side of an impossibly steep hill.... Namche! It is like a city to us. We are in hotel in the middle of town. Stone hotels are packed into the hillside with brightly painted windows. The winding, very narrow stone walks, a loaded with people, yaks, donkeys carrying duffels. You have to dodge all as you work your way around town.

We all did well with the increase in altitude. Going up to over 11,300, most are feeling the altitude. The steps are slow, some are sweating profusely. There are people from all over the world here. We walked with a local Tibetan woman to her home town here. We shared encouragement despite not having a common language.

The walk was stupendous, lots of waterfalls and terraced tiny fields with stone lodges and shops lining the route. The milky green river, gushing from here near Everest, provides great back ground music.

And, we got a first view of Everest among the clouds. Hard to believe we are here!

I hope you’re doing well and staying strong through the thin air. I look forward to reading the blog updates. They literally give me goosebumps! Love the history attached. Calvin and I leave for London and Paris today for his fall break. We were supposed to go as a family over the summer and to celebrate my 50th, but had to postpone b/c I found out I had breast cancer. I’ll be checking back often to see how you’re doing. Sending love and strength.

Don't forget hit up the bakeries! I remember the bakery with the red awning in the middle of town at Namche because I'm pretty sure Garth and I went there three times. It had good coffee, treats and a western style bathroom! Happy traveling! Can't wait to read more updates!

Talked to Susan -she said Rory loved learning about Everest - if you can get a prayer flag and plant it at base camp for Rory - that would be great. It sounds amazing! Wow - you got to see Everest! Take care and stay strong. Love Shannon

I miss you and love you !

This sounds like the trip of a lifetime. I am so very jealous of all you are doing and seeing. I would especially like to spend time in the villages and shopping. How wonderful it must be to meet people from all over the world. I am living vicariously through both of you. Stay safe. Margie
