Viewing Post for: Everest Base Camp #1 & #2

Date: Tuesday, October 9
Location: Kathmandu and Bhaktipur

Wonderful day of being immersed in Nepal. We started high on a hill overlooking Kathmandu at an ancient Hindu temple. Picture is of Bill there ringing the bell to let the spirits know we are there. Below us were rice fields and the sprawl of Kathmnadu.

We passed rice laid out to dry, turned by people in bare feet and using homemade plastic hoes on our way to an enclosed city of Bhaktipur. Here the narrow pedestrian streets wound through 400 year old buildings, temples and shops. The earthquake is still evident here. Some people are living in temporary shelters of sheet metal. Some buildings will never be rebuilt. There are piles of bricks and wood in many places waiting to be used. The earthquake killed over 10,000 people. Tourism has not recovered yet.

I think a highlight was a stop at a thonka school. These traditional paintings can take over 2 years to paint. Very fine, up to one haired tooth brushes are used. Painting becomes a form of meditation as it is so intricate to paint these. There was some serious shopping done in the display room.

Dinner was a traditional Nepal dinner that includes sitting on the floor. Course after course was brought out in small brass bowls. Music and dancing accompanied dinner.

Tomorrow We hopefully fly at 6 am to Lukla, the start of our trek. Stay tuned here to see if the weather allows.
