Viewing Post for: Antarctic Adventure

Date: Monday, January 16, 2017
Location: Deception Island

Rick again. I think Jill is up in her room.

We woke up in some rough waves. Currently hunkered down in the protection of the harbor of Deception Island. It is an active volcano filled with water. Hundreds of whales were slaughtered here in the early 1900's. There are still a number of abandoned buildings left from that and the 50's when it was an Antarctic survey station until the volcano erupted. We spent a few hours on shore exploring the old whaling station.

Today was also our chance to swim in the Antarctic. Water is cold enough but the wind was whipping over 30mph. 18 of us stripped down and ran in and dove into the water. Very cool thing to do.

Now we are cruising in the ship around the caldera. We are waiting until after dinner to venture out into the open sea again. There is a report of winds over 50 knots out there.

Tomorrow hopefully we will fly in a small charter off King George Island. Weather dependent. So will put up the next post tomorrow to let you know if we get back to South America or not. Stay tuned....

Your trip has sounded incredible and I've thoroughly enjoyed following it through this - each post and photograph has not only made me slightly envious, but has also solidified my desire to see it all with my own eyes. Looking forward to hearing all about it and seeing more photos. Hope you've all had a great time, and safe travels home to everybody.
