Kilimanjaro Itinerary
(Here is a suggestion for an example, call us to
work out the best situation for you)
Day 1 - January 29
Fly to Moshi, Tanzani
Day 2 - January 30
Arrive in Moshi in late afternoon. You will be met by Yusuf at the
Airport. Stay at Springlands Hotel.
Day 3 - January 31
We will collect you from your hotel and travel by van to Lake Manyara
for a safari. Stay in lodge.
Day 4 -February 1
Safari to Ngorongoro. Great wildlife viewing - chances to see lion,
elephants, zebra, etc.
Day 5 -February 2nd
Safari. Return to Springlands Hotel. Climbing briefing.
Day 6 -February 3rd
Climbing. Machame Gate to Machame Hut (10 km, 5-7 hours, 1200m ascent).
The journey passes through the village of Machame, which is located
on the lower slopes of the Mt Kilimanjaro. Porters will be seen
arranging their packs containing food, water, firewood and other
equipment. Make sure that you have your day-pack items with you.
The guides will be pleased to assist you with any information you
may need. We now leave the park gate and walk through the rain forest
on a winding trail to the first hut, at an altitude of 3048m. We
continue a short distance until we reach Machame Hut. Here we camp,
rest and enjoy our dinner. Overnight at 3100m.
Day 7 -February 4th
Climbing. Machame Hut to Shira Hut (6 km, 5-7 hours, 840m ascent).
After breakfast, we leave the glades of the rain forest and continue
on an ascending path across a small valley. Walking along a steep
rocky ridge covered with heather until the ridge ends, the route
now turns west onto a river gorge at 3658m. Rest, dinner and overnight
at Shira Hut campsite. Excellent views of the Shira Plateau and
the towers and pinnacles to the south.
Day 8 -February, 5th
Climbing. Shira Hut to Barranco Valley (3-5 hours). From the Shira
Plateau, we continue to the east passing the junction towards the
Peak of Kibo. We now head towards the lava tower known as "Shark's
Tooth". Shortly after the tower, we come to the second junction,
which brings us up to the Arrow Glacier. From an altitude of 4876m
we now continue down to the Barranco Hut at an altitude of 3680m
for rest, dinner, and overnight.
Day 9- February, 6th
Climbing. Barranco Valley to Karangua Valley. (5 km, 3-5hours, 110m
ascent). After breakfast, we leave Barranco Hut and continue on
to a steep ridge passing the Barranco Wall.
Day 10- February 7th
Climbing. Karangua to Barafu Hut (5 km, 4 hours, 650 ascent). Now
you are really high on the mountain! You will be getting up early
the next day, but you won't be able to sleep much anyway. Passing
through the Karanga Valley, and the junction which connects with
the Mweka Trail, we continue to the Barafu Hut which is located
at an altitude of 4600m. Here, where the two peaks of Mawenzi and
Kibo can be seen, we camp for the night.
Day 11 -February 8 SUMMIT DAY!
Barafu Hut to Mweka Hut (5 km, 6-7 1/2 hours 1300 ascent, plus 12
km, 4 1/2-7 hours, 2800 meter's descent). You can go around the
Mt. this day if you decide not to do the ascent. Very steep ascent.
Cross scree and snow. Summit at Uhuru Peak (5896m). Early in the
morning, we continue our ascent to Stella Point which is 5745m,
on our way to the summit, Uhuru Peak, which is 5895m. This part
of the climb takes about six hours. We now have reached the highest
point in Africa. From the summit, we make our descent straight down
to the Mweka Hut or Rau Campsite at a mere 3100m. This part of the
descent takes about 5 hours. Later in the evening, we enjoy our
last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned rest.
Day 12- February 9
Descending. After breakfast we continue the descent down to the
Mweka Park Gate, then drive back to Moshi.
Day 13- February 10
We will leave this day for our flight back to the States.
Day 14- February 11
Arrive back in USA.
