DESCRIPTION:
Arctic adventure in the best of the Alaskan North Slope! Nothing matches the magnitude of this land. The beauty, character and location of this River combine to make it a very special place. If you're looking for an uncrowded adventure in the year 2009, join this remote wilderness trip. Part of the adventure is getting there! Start and finish the trip in a bush plane landing on gravel bars. From Fairbanks, fly to a remote Arctic village in the interior. From here you will take a bush plane to the headwaters in the mountains. The river trip starts in the mountains for great scenery and hiking. The river is class II and III, which you'll paddle in rafts with experienced guides. It can be negotiated by neophyte and experienced paddlers. Here the water is clear and fast. The glaciers that you see in the mountains feed the side streams emptying in.
The river leaves the mountains by way of a scenic gorge as it enters the foothills and heads to the Arctic Sea . In this area the vast caribou herds have just birthed their young. Other possible wildlife sightings include grizzly, wolves, musk ox and eagles. You get picked up by bush plane on the Arctic Ocean just after an abandoned Inupiat Eskimo site. You land on Barter Island . This Inupiat Eskimocommunity comes complete with whale carcasses and the occasional polar bear. This is a wilderness adventure of the finest Alaskan proportions. If you have a hankering to see some of the most remote and beautiful places in the world, you could not pick a finer adventure. Newcomers and sourdoughs alike are welcome. Beware of the call of the wild. Once you are touched by the Arctic wilderness, you will never be the same. Starts and ends in Fairbanks, Alaska . Limited to 8 people.
