DESCRIPTION:
The name "Altay" (or "Altai") comes from Mongolian "Altan", which means "golden". The Altay mountains are truly one of the nature's most marvelous gems, amazing by its diversity and beauty. It's one of those rare corners on the Earth where Nature decided to show everything it was capable of. Broad and boundless views of steppes, luxuriant varieties of taiga thickets, modest charm of deserts, severe splendor of snowy peaks, laconic beauty of tundra - the diversity of landscapes here is so rich, it is as if you are turning over pages of a geographical atlas! We'll get the chance to experience the diversity of the land by a variety of means, travel on foot and by horse, over land and by water.

One of the true wonders of the area is that it is just opening up to tourism and therefore remains quite untainted by the outside world. A number of villages still retain the ways of the Old Believers, with strict rules and very much isolated from civilization. Our time in the Altai region will be a harmonious blend of cultural exploration and adventure. We will explore both cultures past and present, visit museums, ancient standing stone, burial mounds and petroglyphs, and even spend the night in a traditional Altai dwelling, a six sided tepee called ail. During it all, we'll never be far from our next adventure whether it be a hike to a nearby lake, an alpine horse trek or rafting on the Chuya River. This trip is sure to excite both the historian and adventurer in everyone.
